A WOMAN in her eighties has been flown to hospital in a serious condition after a crash between two vehicles.

The crash happened in Mersea Road, Peldon, this morning before 8.45am.

The Herts Air Ambulance, fire crews and paramedics rushed to the scene where a woman in her eighties had suffered multiple fractures and a man thought to be in his early sixties suffered multiple but minor injuries.

Fire crews from West Mersea and Colchester worked to free both casualties.

The rescue took an hour and a quarter.

The woman has been flown to King's College Hospital in London in a serious but stable condition.

The male patient was taken by land ambulance to Colchester General Hospital.

A spokesman for the ambulance service said two ambulances, the Herts Air Ambulance and a rapid response paramedic were sent to the scene.

She said the call had come in about a 'head-on' collision between two vehicles.
