A CARETAKER who worked at a residential home for the elderly in the Walton area has been convicted of stealing from residents.
Martin Hubbard, 49, of Deben Close, Witham, stole money and possessions from the residents while in a position of trust during a period between June and November 2015.
He was convicted of six counts of burglary and two counts of theft against two residents.
Appearing at Colchester Magistrates Court on Tuesday, Hubbard was given a 12-month custodial sentence suspended for 12 months and a 20-day Rehabilitation Activity Requirement.
He must also carry out 80 hours of unpaid work and was ordered to pay £130 compensation to one victim and £220 to the other.
He has also been ordered to pay £85 costs, and £115 victim surcharge.
Det Con Phil Terry, who led the investigation, said: "Martin Hubbard exploited his position as caretaker to steal from vulnerable people who expected to be able to live in peace and security.
“He went in when they were not at home, or used deceitful and cruel methods to con his way in so he could steal their money.
"I would urge elderly and vulnerable people to be careful over who they let into their homes."
