LADIES marked their club's 50th anniversary with a special bash.

Half a century ago the St John's and Highwoods Ladies Club began when it was known as the St John's Wives Club.

More than 60 members now meet on the first Thursday of every month for talks with guest speakers, outings and theatre trips.

Opera singer Jake Foley provided entertainment at the anniversary bash and chairman Moyra James welcomed returning members who helped found the club.

She said: "A lot of friendships are made at the club and we do provide so very good entertainment.

"People like the different things we do together.

"It was originally suggested by health visitors women got together and has gone on from there."
