CROWDS cheered as a wide array of weird and wonderful pantomime horses raced along Colchester High Street.

Shoppers mingled with charity volunteers and competitors at the first annual Auld Nag’s Folly on Sunday.

Organised by Age Concern Colchester, the event was held to raise cash to help the older generation and remind people of the charity’s goals.

Businesses and charities including Fisher Jones Greenwood solicitors, Helpline, Invicta and Outreach East were on hand to put up stalls and offer their support.

The main event was a series of pantomime horse racing along a stretch of Colchester’s High Street, which was closed to traffic to allow the event to take place.

Throughout the day, hundreds turned out to cheer the colourful horses on, with plenty of spills and thrills to keep the crowd entertained.

Volunteers expect to have raised around £1,000.

Jonathan Moore, Age Concern chief executive, said: “We were inspired by the old pantomime horse prop, which like the older generation are often forgotten about.

“There was real enthusiasm from every competitor and we had a fantastic day overall.

“We hope to be back next year after an amazing first ever pantomime horse race.”
