A NURSING student from Dovercourt has been shortlisted for a prestigious scholarship award.

Katie Horne, 20, of Valley Road, Dovercourt, is one of 22 candidates hoping to win the Outstanding Student Nurse Award at the 2012/13 Cavell Nurses’ Trust Scholarship Awards.

The winner will be given a travel scholarship worth £1,500.

Katie, who is studying for a children’s nursing degree at Anglia Ruskin University in Chelmsford, said: "I never expected to be a finalist.

"But if I did win I would go to Melbourne in Australia to work at the Children's Research Hospital.”

The Cavell Nurses’ Trust was set up 1917in memory of Edith Cavell, a British nurse who was executed by Germany in the First World War.

The trust’s scholarship awards, which started last year, aims to help exceptional student nurses and midwives kick start their careers.

Katie will face a judging panel comprised of prestigious nurses and midwives on Friday February 8 in London.
