Squirrels club to open by summer

A HISTORIC social club is set to be reopened in July, it has beeen revealed.

Builders have been working on the former Squirrels club, in Lower Marine Parade, Dovercourt, for the past few weeks.

The extension to the Waterfront, as it will be renamed, has this week been given a roof, with the walls also being completed.

It will house a new members area, lounge bar and meeting room.

Mr Clifton bought the building last April after Tendring Council put it on the market with strict conditions for its development.

The council had promised it would be saved and kept for community use in 2009 after plans to sell, bulldoze and replace the building with flats were scrapped.

The plans were given the go ahead by Tending Council in August.

Work started last summer refurbishing inside the current club, which will see a new lounge, bar, kitchen and function room built fronted with a large glass screen.

When open, the club, which has five tennis courts, would create about 25 jobs for the town.
