STEPS are finally being taken to tidy up a Harwich grot spot which locals branded “eyesore of the year”.

Tendring Council gave the landlord of 20 Market Street, Harwich, until March 1 to come up with a plan of action to sort out his crumbling building.

Neighbours have been campaigning for seven years to get the site cleared up. A fire in the top-floor flat in April meant the building was no longer safe to live in and had to be torn down.

Tendring officers visited the site on Wednesday, March 6, to assess it and decide how to proceed.

Officers are now working to get the fence around the building removed, which residents claim is trapping dead rats and pigeons.
