Anglian Water forced to shell out after live terrapin blockage
6:00pm Friday 23rd August 2013 in Harwich and Manningtree News
AN astonishing 30,000 water pipes are blocked every year in Essex by bizarre items, including false limbs, mobile phones... and even a live terrapin.
The needless concrete-like blockages are costing Anglian Water customers £7million a year to deal with.
The company also says about 20,000 tonnes of fats, oils and grease are in the sewer network at any one time. Most comes from residents washing just a small amount down their drains.
An Anglian Water spokesman said: “By not putting left over fats, oils and grease down the sink and putting unflushable items like wipes, sanitary products and nappies in the bin, we can help avoid nasty blockages and possible sewer flooding."
