Councillor fears supermarket extension could harm High Street
2:00pm Tuesday 3rd September 2013 in Harwich and Manningtree News
A PROPOSED supermarket extension could harm the local High Street according to a leading councillor.
Harwich Town Council were discussing the plans to extend Morrisons in Freshfields Road from 19,000 square feet to 27,500 square feet.
Garry Calver, who is both a town and district councillor for the Labour party, fears that the 30 jobs that could be created at the store would cause problems for stores in the town centre.
“I have my concerns about this proposal and mixed feelings,” Mr Calver said.
“Any expansion of the store threatens more and more jobs in the town centre. “There is a direct correlation between businesses closing and expansion outside of the High Street.
“I have growing concerns about the affect it might have on businesses in Dovercourt High Street.”
