Thousands of cigarettes seized at Harwich Port
2:00pm Friday 20th September 2013 in Harwich and Manningtree News
AN attempt to smuggle thousands of cigarettes into the UK has been foiled by Border Force officers at Harwich port.
Officers discovered the cigarettes shortly after 8pm on Saturday after they searched a trailer travelling from the Hook of Holland.
The smugglers had made no attempt to conceal the 100,000 cigarettes, simply placing the cartons on top of a legitimate load of food.
Had the smuggling attempt been successful it could have the cost the Treasury about £27,000 in unpaid excise duty.
Charlotte Mann, assistant director for Border Force at Harwich, said: “Any attempt to smuggle cigarettes into the UK is unacceptable and I would like to praise the hard work and vigilance of our officers in making this seizure."
