Fiddle outlawed for 'evoking the devil’ to be played for charity
6:00pm Friday 4th October 2013 in Harwich and Manningtree News
A FIDDLE which was outlawed for evoking the devil will be played at a concert in Dovercourt.
Music teacher Catherine Rees will play her Hardanger fiddle at All Saints Church tomorrow.
The fiddle, which is a traditional Norwegian instrument, is often played outside.
However for a special concert to raise funds for Tearfund it will be played inside the church.
Mrs Rees, of The Drive, Dovercourt, said: “The Hardanger fiddle is originally from Norway. It was outlawed in the 1800s as it was said to evoke the devil when played."
The concert will be held at All Saints Church in Dovercourt from 6pm. There is no entrance fee but people are asked to make donations to the charity.
