Councillor wants the truth about maternity unit
6:00pm Monday 7th October 2013 in Harwich and Manningtree News
A LEADING councillor has called on NHS bosses to come clean about the real reasons behind their consultation on whether Harwich’s maternity unit should be closed.
Labour councillor for Harwich Ivan Henderson believes that the purpose of the review into whether the birthing unit at the Fryatt Hospital would be closed down is being done to cut costs rather than with mother’s best interests in mind.
“I want them to tell the truth.
“This is not about the good of the mothers or families using the unit, it is about a lack of resources at Colchester General."
An NHS spokesman said that a day at Harwich maternity unit was split into three shifts and for seven shifts in August and six in September the unit was shut.
This was mainly in the late shift between 9.30pm and 7.30pm which is statistically the least busy in Harwich.
In 10 cases this was due to a shortage of midwives in Harwich and in the other three it was to provide cover for staff sickness in Colchester.
The unit will now be served during the night shift by on-call midwives with women still able to deliver there at night, and will be staffed round the clock from January 1.
