A CONCERNED mum says her 14-year-old son has been left too weak to get out of bed because hospital staff are unable to control his deteriorating disease.
Scott O’Connell has been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, but despite eight months of medical tests, doctors have not found a drug to control the condition.
Mum Rachel, of Freshfields, Dovercourt, felt Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, had not done enough to help her eldest son, who has been unable to go to school for more than a year.
“He’s been in agony. He can’t even get out of bed, but they keep discharging him from hospital.
“I feel the care we’ve had is appalling.”
Scott has undergone tests, including four colonoscopies and an MRI and has been on intravenous steroids.
But in less than two months, he has lost one and a half stone and, despite being discharged from Addenbrooke’s Hospital a week ago, was taken by ambulance on Tuesday to Colchester General Hospital in severe pain.
A spokesman for Addenbrooke’s Hospital said it could not comment on individual cases.
“We are sorry that Ms O’Connell feels she hasn’t received the best care that we strive to offer here and would urge her to get in touch to discuss it with Patient Advice and Liaison Service.”
