TOE-tapping students from a dance academy waltzed away with a host of prizes from a national competition.

Pupils from Boogie Shoes Dance Academy, in Harwich, competed at the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing Disco Freestyle and Rock ’n’ Roll National Grand Final, in Guildford, on Sunday.

Sophie Elmes, 11, made Boogie Shoes history by taking home two national titles in one day, winning the under- 12 national set dance event, and the under-12 national rock ’n’ roll event alongside her sister Abigail.

Principal Katie Gooch said: “Sophie looked stunning on the dancefloor with flawless technique, precision, floor presence and a first place smile.

“Sophie and Abigail had perfect timing, leg action and posture and they danced like they truly were in it to win it.

“They have wiped the floor with their rock ’n’ roll routines for the last three years and I could not be prouder.”

Also placing in the top five out of the hundreds of entrants in the rock ’n’ roll category were Chloe Collyer, Dylon O’Kane, Paris Lands, Molly Hodgeson, Katie Rowe, Katie Rawlins-Waumsley, Imogen Matthews, Rebekah Paulley, Charley Neal and Holly Cooper- Keeble. Holly also came forth in the set dance event.

In freestyle solos, Mollie Woodward and Scarlett Fearn came first, while Katie Rowe came second in her section.

Jessica Powell and Louise Mayhew placed first in their disco pairs, with Nina Montgomery, Niamh Fitzgerald, Nancy Petit and Emily Steward as runners-up.
