VOLUNTEERS have packed more than 250 shoeboxes full of goodies to give underprivileged children some Christmas cheer.

Members of Manningtree Methodist Church and the Trefoil Guild have donated stationery, toys, games and clothing to go to youngsters in 130 countries as part of the Samaritan’s Purse Operation’s Christmas Child appeal.

Church steward David Shearmur said it was important to keep those less fortunate in mind, especially in the run-up to the festive season.

“We have had great support from members of the community with the appeal, which helps children all over the world,” he said.

“Something as simple as a pen and a pad might help them get a place in a school in some parts of Africa. A lot of the children might be orphans, or living on the streets, so donating the boxes can give them a little bit of joy.”
