A PORT worker was stranded 40ft above Harwich International Port after a gangway collapsed.

The man was working on the gangway, which connects foot passengers on land to docked ships, when part of it collapsed this morning shortly before 10.40am.

No passengers were on it at the time and no ship was connected.

Crews from Dovercourt and Colchester raced to the scene to rescue the man by 12pm.

Sub Officer Pete Neal, from Dovercourt fire statio, said: "When we arrived at the port a man in his thirties had been working on a gangway which is used to connect to the ship so foot passengers can get onboard.

"The gangway had a tunnel covering attached and one section of the gangway had collapsed, leaving the man stranded approximately 40 feet over the dock."

Firefighters used an aerial ladder to pick the man to safety.

Sub Officer Neal added the man was rescued unharmed by 12pm.
