GREEN-FINGERED youngsters gathered to plant specially selected flowers at a war memorial.

A variety of Mayflower Rose had been chosen to brighten up the Minesweeper’s Memorial in Marine Parade, Dovercourt, because of the town’s links to the ship that sailed to America in 1620.

Pupils from Spring Meadow, St Joseph’s, Chase Lane, All Saints’, Harwich Community Primary and Mayflower Primary Schools were all on hand to plant 60 roses costing £500.

They were joined by councillors and representatives from the Mayflower Project, which aims to build a replica of the ship to relive the journey of the Pilgrim Fathers in 2020.

Tendring Council’s open space manager Trevor Mill said: “The planting all went well and I think the children enjoyed themselves.

“We were pleased to have them along with other groups – such as the Mayflower Project – which meant it was a real community activity.”
