DESPITE a mild winter so far, the first flurries of snow have begun to fall across England.

Last week the East of England was on a Met Office level three cold weather watch meaning ice, frost, and the chance of sleet or snow.

We took a look back in the archives to see how January faired for weather in the past.

On January 1, 1982 residents said the River Stour saw the worst conditions since the big freeze of 1947, which saw snow fall every day somewhere in the country between January 22 and March 17.

And in January 1985 it was time for fun in the snow with children taking to Dovercourt cliffs with just plastic sheets as sleds or making snowmen in the garden.
