AN AFTERNOON tea with music event will kick start fundraising for a new health centre in eastern Rwanda.

Engalynx, a charity based in Brantham, completed and kitted-out a maternity unit in the Mwulire district, which has a population of almost 19,000, in September.

The ward was the first part of a project to create medical aid in Ntunga.

Currently residents are forced to walk up to 40km to see their nearest doctor – which is about the distance from Manningtree to Witham.

Maralyn Bambridge, one of the charity’s organisers, spent three years fundraising for the maternity ward, after hearing how women had no nearby access to medical care when in labour.

Violinist Catherine Rees and her pianist husband, Stuart, will be hosting an Afternoon Tea with Music to raise funds for the latest project.

The event will be on Friday March 27 at 3pm at the Congregational Church, Crown Lane, East Bergholt.

Tickets are £5 per person - to book a place call Maralyn on 01206 393022.
