THE 70th anniversary of VE day is to be commemorated in Harwich.

A group of Second World War vehicle owners have joined forces with the Harwich Society to put on the event on May 4.

May 8 will mark 70 years to the day when Prime Minister Winston Churchill announced to the British people Nazi Germany had surrendered after six years of war.

The event will take place at the Redoubt Fort, where there will be Second World War vehicles on display.

A convoy of the vehicles, including half-tracks, will parade from Wix to Harwich via Low Road, Dovercourt, before parking close to the Redoubt or at the Radar Tower.

Veterans will be able to meet each other at the fort and hear the Royal British Legion Brass Band.

An air display would see a Norfolk based P51 Mustang Second World War fighter plane take to the skies at about 2pm.

But the organisers need residents and groups to contribute funds towards the air display, which will cost £2,000.

Anyone wanting to contribute or requiring further information can call Ed on 01255 870636.
