A TAXI driver was repeatedly punched and had his takings stolen after an early-morning robbery in Harwich.
Police were called to George Street at 1.30am on Saturday after the driver was attacked by two men while he was in the car.
More than £220 and a pair of prescription sunglasses were taken.
The driver suffered facial injuries including cuts, swelling to his nose and lips and a bottom tooth went through his chin, causing a small hole.
Police sent sniffer dogs to the scene immediately afterwards.
The men have been described as white, with one wearing a blue hooded top and the other wearing a black-and-grey hooded top.
Harwich councillor David Flavell said: "It is awful.
“People in Harwich regard taxis as a form of public transport–that is how people get around.
“If taxi drivers are going to be put off working late because of this, that is going to really impact on the community.”
Anyone with information regarding the robbery in George Street should call 101.
