HARWICH's flagship arts festival has been dealt a major funding blow forcing organisers to scale back the summer event for 2015.

The Harwich Festival of the Arts, labelled one of the top 15 arts festivals in the UK, has been turned down for a crucial cashpot to fund performers for the annual event.

Last year the festival, which spans 12 days and includes music, exhibitions and workshops, was given £29,000 from the Arts Council.

Chairman of the festival trust, Peter Davis said some acts had been cut due to the loss of the funding and the event now needs extra support this year to make up for the shortfall.

"Given our present circumstances we need our local support more than ever - this can come in various ways," Peter said.

"Individuals can support us by becoming a Friend of the Festival where you can get priority booking, discounts, newsletters, receptions etc, or through making a donation or sponsoring an event."

A full programme of events at this year's festival is set to be revealed in the coming weeks.
