A FARMER is giving away tonnes of free potatoes claiming the good season has left them worthless.

Richard Mitchell runs Ragmarsh Farm in Bradfield with his family.

They have been growing potatoes on the farm since 1953 and mainly sell to the Canary Islands due to their location near Essex and Suffolk ports.

But the successful season for the crop this year means there is a wealth of produce across the UK, which in turn forces the price down.

"It's called a glut," said Richard.

"We were left with 200 tonnes we can't sell."

Free potatoes will be available at the Ragmarsh Farm shop in Riverside Avenue East, Lawford on Fridays and Saturdays starting today.
