REFURBISHMENTS are just “papering over the cracks” on trains no longer fit for purpose, according to a rail campaigner.

Derek Monnery, chairman of the Essex Rail Users’ Forum, welcomed the “short term fix” improving ten trains but believes more drastic action is needed.

The Abellio Greater Anglia Class 321s, which run through Manningtree and Harwich, will be getting more comfortable seats, air conditioning, new heating systems, wi-fi, power sockets, new lighting and replacement systems.

But Mr Munnery said: “The Class 321s are the worst trains available on any London route.

“The seats are very uncomfortable and the ride is poor so anything that can be done to improve this is of course welcome but in the longer term they have got to get rid of the trains.”

The full refurbishment of ten trains is on top of minor improvements to another 40.

They will be available by the end of the year.

Money is also being invested on improvements to waiting areas at Manningtree Railway Station.
