WINDSURFERS from across the globe are expected to ride the waves in Dovercourt this summer at a specialist championship event.

Quiver Windsurfing, based at Dovercourt boating lake, will host a series of races as part of the Slalom Windsurfing Championships 2016.

There will also be a variety of bands from blues to hard rock, a Second World War style tent bar and a collection of Volkswagen classic cars.

A smaller version of the event was held last year just after the windsurfing school opened.

But owner Darren Herbert said this year he is expecting a much bigger turnout with competitors and spectators as well as hundreds of Volkswagen classic car enthusiasts.

""It will be more of a professional level this year.

"And we will be raising money for the St Elizabeth Hospice - they will come along on the day and donations from the event and the bar will go to the charity.

"Last time we had a few people with Volkswagens come down for a mini festival but this year we've been asked to do it as an official Volkswagen festival - there will be all these classic Volkswagens on the seafront.

"There will also be competitors from across the country and the world - last year we had people from Spain, Australia and Germany.

"I think we will have a lot more people there this year too, people know us more and we know the setup here better now too."

The event on June 4 and 5 is being held in partnership with the British Slalom Association.
