FRUSTRATED parish councillors are pleading with residents not to dump garden waste in their village.

Ramsey and Parkeston Parish Council is calling on people to stop dumping garden waste in hedgerows in Wix Road, Ramsey.

Council chairman George Elmer said the waste, which is mainly grass cuttings, has been piling up in the hedges opposite Windmill Close for some time.

He said the waste was getting into ditches and causing flooding.

“There was a problem with flooding in Wix Road,” added Mr Elmer. “The ditches were cleared and the flooding stopped.

“Now this waste is clogging up the ditches causing flooding again.

“We appeal to whoever is doing this to stop. If it carries on, we will be forced to take further measures.”

Parish councillor David Smith added he feared the problems with flooding would get worse if the dumping continued.

“I went to have a look on Friday when it was raining quite hard and the road flooded,” he said.

“It is obvious from the size of the pile that the dumping has been going on for some time.

“They have now started a second pile – it has got to stop.

“The big pile is rotting and starting to smell. It will only get worse in the summer.”
