THE final of a historic children’s football tournament was held in front of a roaring crowd.

The Fisherman’s Cup started in 1951 when fisherman clubbed together and decided they wanted to do something for the schools in Harwich.

The annual competition sees primary schools in Harwich, Dovercourt and nearby villages battle it out on the pitch every year.

The 65th final was a pulsating match, held between previous champions Chase Lane Primary School and All Saints’ Primary School, both in Dovercourt.

All Saints’ Primary School won the match 6-4, ending a spell of dominance for Chase Lane Primary School spanning five years.

Richard Simmons, coach for the Chase Lane team, said: “It was a brilliant game and I would say the best I have ever been involved in – there must have been 100 or so people cheering them on.

“It was a back and forth game and was poised at 4-3 at the end of the first half.

“I have to mention our goalkeeper, Ty Garnier, who made a great save to keep us in the game in the first half.

“It was played in really good spirit, and there was a real sense of sportsmanship.”

The Fisherman’s Cup match was held at the Royal Oak ground, in Dovercourt, on Saturday, May 7.
