A 100-metre cordon has been put in place on a beach after "unexploded hand grenade" was found by a walker.
The cordon is in place on part of a beach, in Lower Marine Parade, Harwich, and it is closed to the public.
Essex Police say the item which has caused concern "could be" an unexploded hand grenade.
The item was found shortly after 11am today by a member of the public who then made the seafront warden aware.
An Essex Police spokeswoman said: "Police would ask members of the public to observe the cordon which may remain until later this evening when experts from the Navy’s disposal unit can deal with the device at low tide."
