A MAN is fighting for his life after he fell from a supermarket roof.

Police were called to Main Road, Dovercourt, after the man climbed onto the roof of Asda.

About an hour later, the man, in his forties, fell to the ground and suffered a serious head injury and a broken leg.

An Essex Police spokesman said: “By the time officers arrived a man had climbed onto the roof of the nearby Asda store.

“Officers attended and negotiated with the man in an attempt to get him off the building.

“The store was also cleared of customers and the car park was cordoned off.”

The man was treated at the scene by ambulance crews, who were already in attendance, and was taken to Colchester General Hospital.

He was later transferred to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.

Police have described his injuries as “life-limiting” and say he was in hospital in a stable condition.

The spokesman added: “Officers are investigating the circumstances and would ask that any witnesses who have not already spoken to police to come forward.

“Due to the nature of the incident, a referral has been made to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.”

This is standard procedure when the police are in the vicinity of a serious injury or death.

The incident happened on Monday, September 19.

A spokesman for East of England Ambulance service said multiple emergency teams were on the scene.

He said: “We were called at 8.09pm to Main Road.

“Crews treated one patient, a man believed to be in his forties, who had fallen from height.

“He suffered a serious head injury and a broken leg and was taken by land ambulance to Colchester General Hospital in a life threatening condition.”
