HARWICH and Parkeston stalwart Barry Vernon has admitted being “shocked and humbled” by the way the football community has rallied around him following his leg amputation.

The Shrimpers committee member – a former chairman of the club – lost his right leg after being struck down with gangrene.

It started in his little toe and “spread like wildfire” – giving his surgeon no choice but to remove the limb.

Vernon had the operation a fortnight ago and returned home on Friday.

“I’ve been so shocked and humbled by the support and warm wishes I’ve received – 90 per cent of which has come from the football community,” he said.

“It’s hit me for six.

“I’ve received more than 200 cards and was lucky enough to have lots of visitors when I was in hospital - some of whom I hadn’t seen for years.

“I’d just like people to know how extremely grateful I am and it’s certainly helped me during a difficult time.”

Vernon still hopes to attend today’s Essex and Suffolk Border League match between Harwich and Hatfield Peverel, at the Royal Oak.
