A KEY history board has been put up at the Royal Naval Dockyard in Harwich.

The information board, which cost £400, lists the ships built at the historic site between 1660 and 1827.

Previously it was a shipyard which was visited by Elizabeth I in 1561, and before that the site of a 12th century castle.

Colin Farnell, chairman of the Harwich Society, which put up the new board, said: “We are very pleased with the new information board and it is receiving a lot of favourable comments.

“The history of the Naval Dockyard is fascinating and the board is a key stopping point for the Harwich Society guides doing their walking tours.”

The free walking tours of Historic Harwich carried out by the Harwich Society leave from outside the Ha’Penny Pier Visitor Centre at 2pm every Saturday afternoon throughout the summer season and last around two hours.
