COMEDIAN and film star Dudley Moore is being celebrated in a Valentine’s Day concert at the Electric Palace.

Moore was well known for his television work with satirist Peter Cook, as well as being the star of Hollywood films Ten and Arthur.

But, he was also a composer and pianist, who fronted the Dudley Moore Trio on the BBC show Not Only... But Also.

His eloquent and romantic compositions in the timeless tradition of Erroll Garner and Oscar Peterson will be played by the Chris Ingham Quartet.

Chris Ingham, Suffolk pianist, said: “For all the acclaim he received as a comic actor, and the affection with which he is remembered as a hilarious and lovable personality, it may be that the most interesting thing about Dudley Moore’s reputation is how undervalued he is as a jazz man and composer.

“It will be a privilege if our efforts open a few ears to the jazz side of this remarkable musician.”

Making up the quartet are Geoff Gascoyne on bass, who played at the Electric Palace with the Derek Nash Acoustic Quartet last month, George Double on drums, and Colchester-based trumpeter Paul Higgs, who joined Harwich’s own Tendring Thunderbirds as guest for their concert last summer.

Simon Ashley, of the Electric Palace, said: “There could be no more appropriate music to celebrate February 14 than that of the perennially romantically-inclined Dudley’s.

“This will be a concert truly to delight the ear.”

The Electric Palace has also teamed up with the Alma Inn, to offer a Valentine’s Day pre-concert dinner.

Tickets for the concert can be bought from the bar. To reserve a table, call the Alma on 01255 318681.

Tickets for The Chris Ingham Quartet with Paul Higgs on Wednesday, February 14, cost £10 and are available from electricpalace.com, the Harwich box office at Dovercourt Library.

Doors open at 7.30pm.
