GOGGLEBOX star George Gilbey has appeared in court accused of assaulting his former girlfriend.

Gilbey, 34, denied charges of assault by beating and criminal damage to property valued under £5,000 when he appeared at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

Gilbey found fame as an armchair TV critic on the Bafta-winning show Gogglebox in 2013.

He became known for his quips and funny comments on the show, for which he was filmed watching TV each week from the lounge of his family home in St Osyth.

He went on to appear in Channel 5’s Celebrity Big Brother the following year alongside 13 other celebrities.

Gilbey appeared in court accused of assaulting his ex-girlfriend Gemma Conway at her home in Twickenham last month.

The electrician is also accused of damaging her property while he was there.

Gilbey had been with Ms Conway since 2015 and the pair had their daughter in June 2016.

It is understood that Gilbey is now living back with mum, Linda, and step-dad Pete.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson confirmed a 34-year-old man had been charged with assault by beating and criminal damage following an incident on Friday March 16.

He was bailed to appear at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

Following his not guilty plea, Gilbey will return to court to face a trial on June 1.
