Harwich council will offer support to businesses bidding for a share of a £1million government grant to reinvigorate the town’s high street.

The ‘Portas Pilot’ scheme is a partnership between the government and retail guru Mary Portas, and will see 12 towns across the country receive cash and expertise to help bring trade back to their high streets.

Harwich Town Council agreed at a meeting on Wednesday to support any bid from the town, and the mayor would liase with the town’s Chamber of Commerce.

Councillor Dave McLeod said: “If people like the business chamber are prepared to do something we should at least show support.”

The town has to submit a bid by the end of March.
