One in five families in the district are just one month’s salary away from disaster as they struggle to pay the bills.
There are 2,594 families behind on their credit cards and other payments by an average of £1,862, with a total debt of £4,829,092.
The figures, compiled by the Children’s Society and the StepChange Debt Charity, do not include families with debt who are keeping up with payments.
The Children’s Society research shows 4,519 children in the district are affected by problem debt.
