WHILE most of us would consider running just one half marathon an achievement, George Myburgh has set himself a mission – to run one each month for a year.
George, 41, of Bounstead Road, Colchester, got a taste of running when he took on the Windsor half marathon two years ago.
The Red Cross volunteer said: “Sometimes I think ‘what am I doing?’ But it is a personal goal.
“I am heading towards 50 now and I figured I want to keep fit and raise money in the meantime.”
His half marathons will raise cash for the Bansang Educational Appeal, set up by his friend, Colchester-based Dr Annabel Kerr in 2008.
It aims to help the children of Bansang, in the Gambia, to complete their school education which will help them get out of poverty.
George ’s first 13.1-mile run will be in Windsor on Sunday.
After that he’s got a half marathon a month, including runs in Birmingham and Brighton.
He also manages to work as a counsellor at University College Suffolk, is a bank worker for the Haven Project in Lexden and he works for Emergency Doctors Medical Services, based at Colchester United’s home ground.
EDMS has agreed to sponsor George £100 for each half marathon he completes.
He is looking for a company to sponsor him to shave his hair either as a one-off or for each of the half marathons.
