COLCHESTER Council has been forced into an embarrassing u-turn which means a controversial Tesco will go ahead.
The supermarket giant had signed a contract with developer Hills Building Group when Colchester Council tried to pull the plug on the development because a planning officer had over-stepped the mark in allowing a number of changes to go ahead without consulting residents.
The issue centred on permission initially being given to turn three outlets into four, in January, but since then plans to convert the four units into one larger unit went unchecked.
But after getting advice from independent planning experts, the council has decided to back down.
Tesco have now confirmed they will press ahead with the Express store, in Cotman Road, in Prettygate.
It will create about 20 jobs.
