Halstead has a new ambulance - but there will not be an extra one for the town.

The new vehicle is part of a drive to ensure no ambulances are more than five years old.

An East of England Ambulance Service spokesman said: "New ambulances mean fewer faults – given the mileage that each vehicle does every year there’s a higher likelihood they have to be taken off the road to fix problems, and of course the older they are the risk gets higher by default.

"Newer vehicles are much less likely, therefore, to be taken out of operations which causes fewer disruptions.

"The ambulance will support operations in north Essex but it won’t be tethered to a specific area as vehicles can move around the region during a shift to help patients where they are needed."

Halstead's ambulance has eight staff and operated 24 hours a day.

A previous vehicle caught fire in March and is no longer in use.
