Traffic clogged up Braintree town centre after emergency works were carried out to repair a gas leak.
National Grid engineers were sent to Coggeshall Road yesterday.
Ian Phillips, National Grid repair supervisor, said: "Our engineers have been working to locate and repair a gas leak in Coggeshall Road at the junction of Cressing Road in Braintree.
“We have now completed the repair.
“After our engineers have carried out the final checks and the road has been resurfaced, we expect the junction to be back to normal before this afternoon's rush hour.
“During the repair Essex County Council Highways introduced a temporary four-way traffic lights system.
“We would like to thank motorists for their patience while we completed this essential emergency repair safely."
