POPULAR restaurant chain Bill’s is set to open in Colchester in July.

The deli-style restaurant will open in High Street, creating 40 jobs.

It will take up much of the former Colchester Council building, in Angel Court.

Bill’s has dozens of outlets across the country, but made the decision to move to Colchester after Taco Bell pulled out of the development last year.

The move has been welcomed by Colchester Council leader Paul Smith, who said it showed the council’s policy of protecting the town centre was working.

He added: “It shows our policy of improving the High Street is working.

“What we’re seeing here is a company with no connections to the area wanting to invest and create jobs in Colchester.

“They could point to anywhere on a map and go there, but they have chosen Colchester.

Not only that, they’ve chosen our High Street.”

Bill’s will join the Royal British Legion in Angel Court, where there is still one unit to let.

The chain is predominantly London-based, having 18 outlets in the capital.

The Colchester restaurant will be the seventh in the East of England.
