COLCHESTER Foodbank is trying to raise funds for a bigger warehouse and a new new service centre.

The foodbank is based on the Moorside Business Park, at Eastgates, Colchester.

Foodbank distribution and service centres are due to open next month in Mersea and Brightlingsea and the group is also looking for venues in Monkwick, Greenstead and Shrub End.

Corinne Thompson, the foodbank’s manager, said: “We have outgrown our warehouse and really need something that can hold 100 tonnes of food. We also need a van to help transport our food. We are hoping there is a suitable premises in Colchester that can meet all our needs and would welcome any suggestions or help.”

Last year, the service distributed 68 tonnes of food, equating to 3,130 parcels, Donations were received bymore than 5,600 people – more than 3,400 adults and 2,200 children.

But demand is growing and the Rev Andrew Fordyce, the bank’s chairman , said: “We are looking to raise funds for a bigger warehouse and a more central foodbank service centre, so families can find us easily, without having to travel all over Colchester.”

He said he hoped more food donations would be made through Harvest festivals.

A number of churches are appealing for items such as tinned potatoes, vegetables, meat dishes and long-life milk as well as long-life fruit juice and tinned puddings.

The donations will be packaged up and distributed by volunteers.

Mr Fordyce said: “Harvest is a time when we give thanks for our food and traditionally people bring food to services in churches and schools for distribution to those in need.

"Sadly, today that need is seen very starkly in the rise of foodbanks.

“I am so glad, however, churches are at the forefront of supplying emergency parcels to those who otherwise would be going hungry.”
