WIVENHOE’S Helping Hands group has given a helping hand to the Cancer Centre Campaign.
The community group has presented £1,000 to the appeal to create a new cancer centre at Colchester General Hospital.
The money is from donations given by clients who have been helped by the group.
Gill Sleightholm, group chairman, said: “We are a voluntary organisation and we help Wivenhoe residents, by taking them to appointments at the doctors and dentists, and to the hospital when they can’t get there on their own.
“It’s a free service, but we ask clients to give donations and nearly everyone does. They are appreciative of the help and it is thanks to their generosity we are able to make this donation.”
Wivenhoe Helping Hands has about 35 volunteers and helps an average of ten people a week.
Ms Sleightholm, of Elmstead Road, Wivenhoe, explained: “We chose the Cancer Centre Campaign because we take quite a few clients to the hospital for cancer treatment.
“We have such a good centre in Colchester, but it would be good to have a centre where you get those extras, too.”
