A CARE home has been told to improve after a health watchdog found it had not addressed risks to residents.

The Care Quality Commission carried out an unannounced inspection at Squeaks House Residential Care Home in Steeple Road, Southminster.

Its report, published last week, found improvements were required to make the care home’s service effective and well led.

Inspectors found a breach of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 as the provider had not demonstrated “an awareness and commitment to address the risks to people’s health, safety and welfare”.

Inspectors found some tasks which had failed to be carried out left residents at risk.

These included a rail for a safety ramp to assist people and staff leaving the building in the event of a fire.

The manager had identified the issue but the provider had not carried out the work.

After the CQC intervened the rail was installed on the day of the inspection.

The inspectors found residents appeared uncomfortable while being moved and despite an electronic hoist being available it had not been brought to the room to assist staff.

The report added: “We also observed a person who was at risk from sliding out of their chair.

“We did not feel staff had the skills and knowledge of the options available to support the person to remain comfortable and safe in their chair.”

Staff were praised for being caring and responsive.

Residents told inspectors: “They are really lovely here, nothing is too much trouble.”

No-one from the home was available for comment.
