PRIMARY school pupils were running, swimming and cycling their hearts out last week to raise money to fund outdoor science.

Children from Wentworth Primary School in Maldon were busy collecting sponsors for their triathlon week, which started off with a swim, before changing for a bike ride and run around the school field.

Children from all age groups took part, including pupils in the foundation year, with the triathlon adapted so they could use paddling pools for a swim.

Sophie Ainscough, teacher at the school and organiser of the event, said: “All the children have been busy collecting sponsors and have thoroughly enjoyed taking part.

“Children brought their bikes or scooters to school and have had an authentic triathlon experience.

“Even the youngest children in foundation have taken part in an adapted triathlon using paddling pools.

“They had to find a quantity of ducks in their pool before moving onto riding around the playground and then completing their run.”

Miss Aimee Spalding, Year 4 teacher and science co-ordinator, also took part in the triathlon to help spur children on.

Miss Amber Nicoll, Key Stage Two PE teacher said: “I have been very impressed with every child's effort. It has been a brilliant success.”

Mrs Rayner, Year One Teaching Assistant said: “The children thoroughly enjoyed the experience.”

Isla McCarthy, from Year One said: “I really enjoyed the swimming.”

George Williams in Year Two said: “I felt a bit tired at the end but I enjoyed it.”

And Lydia Cable in Year Three said: “I thought the cycling part was fun as I don't ride my bike that often.”
