FLATS could be built above a pair of shops which are closing down to make way for a new bank.

Plans have been submitted for four flats above Dorothy Perkins and Burton in Colchester High Street.

The popular stores run by the Arcadia Group are set to close down on Saturday, meaning at least 30 members of staff will lose their jobs, with a Metrobank set to open on site.

The bank will only be using the basement, ground and first floors of the building meaning there is scope for the flats on the level above.

Three of the apartments will be one bed, while the other will have space for two bedrooms.

In a planning statement, property consultants Bidwells said: "There is good demand for accommodation of this type within the area and will enhance the town and provide a positive impact by providing natural surveillance and add vitality into the area.

"The proposed use will ensure that the building is maintained to a high standard and does not become stagnant and fall in disrepair if it remains vacate and will ensures the architectural character and integrity of the building is retained and upheld."

Burton has traded on the site for more than 80 years, with a foundation stone have been laid by founder Montagu Burton's son when the shop was first built.

Metrobank aims to create 25 jobs when the branch opens, and prides itself on only being closed three days per year.

The bank will also take over the building run by hair salon Regis, who plan to move elsewhere in Colchester.

Colchester Council has the final say on the plans, and a decision is expected by August 19.
