CONCERNED residents are calling for a reduced speed limit on a coun- try lane in Burnham amid fears that too many drivers are irresponsibly speeding.

Green Lane has a national speed limit of 60mph hour, yet residents of the road believe it should be reduced to 30mph as “erratic” speeding driv- ers pose a safety threat.

Resident Steven Logan said: “It gets the worst when darkness falls.

“There is no lighting at all down that road and we hear cars powering down there without a care in the world. There have been several near misses for me and a couple of crashes in the last few months.”

Another resident said the junction with the B1010 Maldon Road was a danger spot.

They said: “I ended up in the shrubbery next to the fence because of an inconsiderate driver the other week, which could have scratched the left hand side of my car.”

Councillor for Burnham North Ward Wendy Stamp also believes the limit should be reduced.

She said: “I agree with the residents who are fearful of the speeding drivers.

“We as a council have been made aware of this before but highways have advised that they would not be taking any action.

“I do think it should be reduced to 30mph.

“It’s a beautiful area and location and should be protected. Speeding drivers do not help with this and it’s potentially very dangerous.”

A spokesman for Essex Highways said: “We encourage residents who have concerns about speeding, or other road safety issues, to contact their local Essex county councillor with the details so that they can judge if appropriate to take it to the Local Highways Panel.”
