TRADERS and residents have welcomed plans to “revitalise” Maldon and Heybridge.

Proposals being mooted by Maldon District Council include outdoor dining on the High Street, an iconic bridge over the River Chelmer and a new visitor centre for Promenade Park.

But is it all a bit pie in the sky?

These plans first surfaced two years ago, and despite intentions for the public to be consulted in the summer they were delayed.

With 18 projects in total the overall plan is certainly ambitious.

If the council pulls it off it could put Maldon on the map as a destina- tion of choice, boost visitor numbers and help employment.

However, the repercussions of increased car parking charges and attraction fees still worry people in the town.

You can have have the best attractions, hotels and restaurants, but if visitors are put off by charges then you are back to square one.

But should the council succeed Maldon could finally get the vibrant and thriving town centre it deserves.
