PLANS for a new supermarket on the site of a closed Co-Op have moved a step closer.
Lidl has submitted a planning application for the site on Abbot's Road, Colchester, which would involve them demolishing the existing building and building a brand new store.
The East of England Co-Op closed down in September last year with 43 workers either made redundant or moved to other shops.
According to market research undertaken by Lidl, 98 per cent of people who responded to a consultation backed the idea of a discount supermarket being built at the site.
After a meeting with Colchester Council officers last year, a number of tweaks have been incorporated into the design.
A decision on the plans is expected on April 19 and if given permission, could be set to open next year.
