WIDENING the A12 is a ‘genuine worry’ for some residents living nearby.

Plans to make the road three lanes have concerned people living along the stretch between Boreham and Marks Tey.

Programme leader at Highways England, Richard Hofton, said there will undoubtedly be houses which would need to be bought in order to complete the work.

He did not know at this time how many houses would be affected, but there will be housing experts on hand at the public consultations to answer concerns.

Mark Mascar, who owns the Empire Diner along the A12 at Rivenhall End, said it was a worrying time for residents and businesses.

He said: “It’s going to cause a problem as there are houses and businesses on both sides and they don’t know what is going to happen.

“We didn’t realise how important this place has become to the community and they are really worried they will be isolated.

“There is a genuine concern from residents, we can up and go somewhere else but it’s unsettling for the people who have built their lives there.”

James Abbott, chairman of Rivenhall Parish Council, said it was a necessary job as long as it was sustainable.

He said: “I support safety and sustainability as the Rivenhall section is critical.

“It’s interesting to see they have suggested a new route along that section.

“One of the things I’d be looking for is the protection of public rights of way, also cycling activity and public transport.

“We need to be making sure the whole package is sustainable, and I think we can have a win-win situation.

“It’s complicated but it doesn’t mean we can’t have a positive outcome.”

Witham MP Priti Patel also welcomed the plans.

She said: “The widening of the A12 will reduce congestion and delays on this vital economic corridor.

“These works will support the transformation of our economy in Essex and will help to create new jobs and economic growth.”

“Given the huge importance of this road, I hope as many people as possible will engage with the consultation and hep inform the final decision on the widened route.”
