Angry councillors are calling for answers over the sudden axing of a well-used bus service.

The 72 service, which travelled from Rickstones Road, Witham, to Chelmsford Bus Station, via Hatfield Peverel, was cancelled by First Essex despite residents complaints.

Witham Town Council continues to protest the withdrawal of the service, and collected a petition of more than 300 signatures at Witham Town Hall, in Newland Street.

Councillor John Goodman said: “Witham Town Council strongly opposes the withdrawal of this vital bus service and has requested evidence as to why First have made this decision.

"The Town Council has not been provided with any passenger numbers or revenue loss information."

An online petition, set up by resident Olivia Hodges, now has more than 1,100 signatures.

Witham MP Priti Patel has repeatedly criticised the bus company's decision, saying the move will leave schoolchildren stranded.

“First Group’s sudden decision to cut this important bus route without a full explanation to local residents is appalling," she said.

"At least half a dozen stops will no longer be included in this route, leaving children throughout the Witham area without a transport link to their schools and colleges.

"It is not good enough for First Group to remove several bus stops from the replacement route, particularly those at Gershwin Boulevard and Rickstones Academy, that witness the highest frequency of use by students.

"At the very least, It is vital that First extend this olive branch to the residents of Witham by amending the 71 bus route to include the stops at Gershwin Boulevard and Rickstones Academy, to ensure no child is left behind."

First Essex said it welcomed feedback from residents on changes to its services.

Witham Town Council has asked First for its evidence for the withdrawal of the service to be presented before the meeting of its Community Committee on Tuesday, April 3.
